O presente trabalho objetivou avaliar o escoamento superficial da área que engloba os afluentes do Ribeirão Serragem no município de Tremembé, SP no vale do Paraíba do Sul, localizada na parte a montante da barragem da Fazenda Maristela, bem como mapear o uso do solo da mesma para subsidiar possíveis intervenções visando o uso sustentável dessa bacia. Foram empregadas técnicas de geoprocessamento com o uso de ferramentas do SPRING para a caracterização do uso e ocupação do solo, da caracterização física da bacia e para o cálculo da precipitação efetiva. O presente trabalho objetivou determinar os Hidrogramas de Precipitações Efetivas Máximas a partir do método do Hidrograma Unitário (HU) da bacia do Ribeirão Serragem no município de Tremembé, SP no vale do Paraíba do Sul, localizada na parte a montante da barragem da Fazenda Maristela. Foram empregadas técnicas de geoprocessamento com o uso de ferramentas do SPRING para a caracterização do uso e ocupação do solo e caracterização física da bacia para o cálculo da Precipitação efetiva (Pe) resultante de chuvas máximas sobre a bacia simuladas para 2, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 50, 100 e 200 anos. Se realizó un estudio de mercado de los servicios ambientales hidrológicos (SAH) en la cuenca de Tapalpa, Jalisco, México, cuya superficie es de 21,000 ha, donde el 44% es de uso forestal. Para determinar la oferta hidrológica se utilizó el modelo hidrológico SWAT (soil and water assesment tool, herramienta de valoración de suelo y agua) que presentó un buen ajuste (R2 = 0.85) al ser calibrado con la producción de agua en una de las cinco subcuencas que integran el área de estudio. As natural areas, agricultural lands, and open spaces continue to be developed at unprecedented rates, it is important for land conservation professionals to understand the individuals who might play a role in permanently protecting these lands and their ecological services. Many factors have been shown to influence land protection decisions among private owners, including land-use activities, demographic characteristics, and environmental intention and behavior. Reindeer herding is an emblematic livelihood for Northern Finland, culturally important for local people and valuable in tourism marketing. We examine the livelihood resilience of Finnish reindeer herding by narrowing the focus of general resilience on social-ecological systems (SESs) to a specific livelihood while also acknowledging wider contexts in which reindeer herding is embedded. The ability to incorporate and manage the different drivers of land-use change in a modeling process is one of the key challenges because they are complex and are both quantitative and qualitative in nature. This paper uses Bayesian belief networks (BBN) to incorporate characteristics of land managers in the modeling process and to enhance our understanding of land-use change based on the limited and disparate sources of information. Using the systems approach framework (SAF), a coupled model suite was developed for simulating land-use decision making in response to nutrient abatement costs and water and nutrient fluxes in the hydrological network of the Scheldt River, and nutrient fluxes in the estuary and adjacent coastal sea. Although it has been repeatedly demonstrated that urbanization has negative environmental consequences, the conversion of land to urban use is increasing worldwide and is not likely to abate. We tested the hypothesis that different urban typologies, i.e., distributions of human population and infrastructure, differentially influence the water quality and ecological functionality of emergent marsh wetlands in New York State's Hudson River Valley. Food supply and food distribution have been and are important issues in the global political arena. The recent emergence of biofuel policies has increased the influence of the policy arena on agricultural production. In this paper we show the regional impact of changes in the European Common Agricultural Policy and biofuel policy. Shifting trade patterns, changes in agricultural production, and expansion of agricultural area or intensification of agriculture result in changes in land use and land use emissions. The southern Piedmont of the southeastern United States epitomizes the complex and seemingly intractable problems and hard decisions that result from uncontrolled urban and suburban sprawl. Here we consider three recurrent themes in complicated problems involving complex systems: (1) scale dependencies and cross-scale, often nonlinear relationships; (2) resilience, in particular the potential for complex systems to move to alternate stable states with decreased ecological and/or economic value; and (3) uncertainty in the ability to understand and predict outcomes, perhaps particularly those that occur as a result of human impacts.
